Start with the task: A viewpoint, the historic rift, the visitor-centre exhibition and a Silfra snorkel do not share the same time budget. Decide which one you need to finish before treating Þingvellir as a one-hour Golden Circle stop.

Start by naming the Þingvellir task
These scores compare a short stop, the main path, the free-site visit and Silfra. Check the parking area, path access, operator meeting point and opening information for your date.
P1 Hakið, the viewpoint, a first look at the rift and a return to the meeting point can work; the exhibition, a long walk and unhurried photography cannot all fit as well.
Almannagjá is about 2 km and the Heart of Iceland exhibition takes about 40 minutes; allow 2-3 hours if you want both.
Changing into a dry suit, briefing, walking, entering and leaving the water all sit outside the time in the water; one free rift-hour cannot replace the operator's check-in.
P1, P2, P5 and Silfra do not use the same entrance. Copy the parking area, meeting name and final check-in time from your confirmation; "Þingvellir" alone is not enough.
A short stop works for a fixed tour continuing to Geysir / Gullfoss; when driving south for an overnight stay, an extra hour comes out of your return or check-in buffer.
Break the free-site visit down by task: a short stop, a themed half-day and Silfra can each work on their own terms. Do not let one "Þingvellir" label fill every part of the day.
What can one hour at Þingvellir actually cover?
If a tour gives you an hour, choose one job: reach the viewpoint, take the photographs and return to the meeting point. That is a route constraint, not an official maximum. With a car you have more control, but P1 Hakið, P2 and P5 lead to different parking and path approaches; payment, toilets, a jacket and the walk back still take minutes.

P1, P2 and P5 are different starts
The map answers location, not same-day navigation. P1 Hakið, P2, P5 and Silfra are inside the same park, but one entrance cannot stand in for another with a few minutes of walking. Copy the parking area, meeting name and final check-in time from your confirmation; an activity page that says only “Þingvellir” is incomplete for planning.
Match the time block to the thing you came to finish
Choose one hour: You are on a fixed Golden Circle tour and need to protect Geysir, Gullfoss and an evening booking in town. Keep the aim to Hakið and one section of the rift; Lögberg can wait. If anyone needs step-free access or more rest, ask where the bus stops and collects you. “One hour” is not necessarily one hour on level ground.
Choose two to three hours: You are driving and want the landscape, history and paths rather than a coach-window photograph. Enter the visitor centre from P1. The Heart of Iceland exhibition takes about 40 minutes, so add that block instead of guessing from the building’s size.
Choose half a day: You meet the Silfra operator’s swimming, dry-suit, size and health requirements, and accept the time to change, walk, return to the car and warm up. Þingvellir’s rules require a buddy and equipment suited to 2–4°C water; you cannot enter Silfra alone. Once it is a real option, read whether Silfra is right for you rather than using a photograph as evidence of eligibility.
Free entry still costs parking time and road margin
Thingvellir's natural landscape does not have a standard attraction ticket, but that does not mean you can extend the visit indefinitely after arriving. Parking areas near popular sites may charge a service fee; use the park's notices for the day and on-site signs for the actual availability of P areas, the visitor centre, toilets and paths. If you still need to return to Reykjavík for a transfer, visit Secret Lagoon or reach accommodation on the South Coast after the Golden Circle, an extra hour will make the return leg tighter.
Conversely, if you will still be near the Golden Circle or heading towards the South Coast the next day, a self-drive traveller may find it worthwhile to turn Thingvellir from a short stop into a themed half-day. This is using time to understand the place, not walking every official site. Put the route back into the Golden Circle destination hub, decide whether tonight ends back in Reykjavík or farther south, then use the Golden Circle order, parking and stop worksheet to arrange Geysir and Gullfoss rather than filling the day by attraction count.
Silfra is a separate half-day at Þingvellir
If your focus is the free rift and its history, stop there; the route and entrance decision is already the answer. Can you see Thingvellir in one hour?
You can cover Hakið viewpoint, a short section of Almannagjá and photographs; one hour cannot cover the main path, the visitor centre or Silfra.
How long should a Golden Circle tour allow?
