Hvammsvík sits on the Hvalfjörður (Whale Fjord) side of the route: about 56 km from Reykjavík, 98 km from Keflavík Airport and 38 km from Þingvellir on the current plan. Those figures are distances, not guaranteed driving times. They are enough to show why this is a proper half-day with a road home, not a quick soak before dinner in central Reykjavík.
This is not another Blue Lagoon: know what the visit includes
Hvammsvík’s appeal is its setting. The site has eight natural pools of different sizes and temperatures, with the bay, mountains, steam and tides all part of the view; it also has a steam room, sauna, cold plunge and swim-up bar. Its strength is not the number of facilities, but the sense of being beyond the city even while you are in the water. The trade-off is equally clear: weather, wind, wet clothes and staying warm after you leave all become part of the itinerary.
The current booking page shows daily opening, with standard hours of about 10:30–20:30 and last entry at 19:00; extended summer hours vary with the period announced. Guests must be at least ten, and ages ten to eighteen must be accompanied by an adult aged eighteen or over. Search-result summaries of opening hours, prices or age rules should not shape your whole itinerary; the terms for your date and ticket type are the ones that matter.

The drive to Hvammsvík is a northbound half-day from Reykjavík

The value rises when Hvammsvík is the main activity. With only two hours, adding it to a full Golden Circle list makes the practical score fall away.
Three situations change the answer. A car, a Reykjavík base and one unhurried afternoon favour a self-drive entry. No car and a willingness to trade flexibility for a simple round trip favour the bus transfer. An arrival or departure day only works after luggage, airport timing and cancellation options have been checked. The sea view is tempting on that third day, but a delay can consume every minute of its buffer.

Can I put it on an arrival or departure day?
Only if the flight, transfer or self-drive timing and the booked entry slot all line up. The transfer product checked for this article is about 4.5 hours, before allowing for flight delays or luggage variation; a beautiful sea view does not make an airport deadline more forgiving.
What is the difference between going independently and buying a transfer?
