Two bases suit two different North Iceland days

Akureyri is a working town base. Supermarkets, cafés, restaurants and the public swimming pool are close enough to help after a late arrival, and some days can be done without a car. Whale watching, the botanical garden, Forest Lagoon and the villages around Eyjafjörður can all be fitted around a city stay.

Mývatn puts the landscape closer to the door. Hverir, Dimmuborgir, Hverfjall and the lake's geothermal sights can be grouped without commuting from Akureyri. Accommodation is spread out, so sort dinner and supplies before arriving; if sunrise by the lake matters, proximity saves more time than a larger choice of town services.

The route between the bases can look simple on a map, yet wind, snow and parking stretch the clock. On a two-night itinerary, one night in each place can consume half a day in checkout, luggage and finding the next address. Fix the timed activities first, then choose where the bed belongs.

Whale watching favours an Akureyri or Húsavík night before the boat

Húsavík boats leave from the harbour. From Akureyri, the drive is about an hour; from Mývatn, you add another stretch north. An early departure therefore makes Akureyri or Húsavík the calmer previous-night base when whale watching is the reason for being in the region.

A cancellation does not leave every base with the same alternatives. Akureyri has museums, the botanical garden, the swimming pool and restaurants; around Mývatn, wind or snow can make geothermal stops uncomfortable. You can move towards Mývatn after the boat, but allow for a late return and wet clothing. Pairing a geothermal bath with a long drive leaves little room for dinner or sleep before the next early start.

Mývatn earns its keep on a sightseeing day

When the day includes Hverir, Hverfjall, Dimmuborgir and the geothermal landscape around the lake, staying at Mývatn keeps the drives between stops short. Check the wind first, then choose the crater or lava fields; as the light changes, you can return towards the lake instead of commuting from Akureyri.

If Dettifoss or Ásbyrgi is the next day's work, Mývatn is the more logical southern base. When that road is unsuitable, switch to Goðafoss or lake-area sights instead of making an empty return to Akureyri.

A room's address matters more than its amenity list

A central Akureyri hotel makes walking and dinner easy, although parking may need its own arrangement. A place outside town can offer quiet and a car space, but each meal becomes a drive. Mývatn accommodation sits nearer the sights and farther from services, so confirm check-in and food options before a late arrival.

Three people, large cases and wet layers can change the calculation. Count floor space, drying space, luggage handling, parking and breakfast together; those details affect the next departure more than a polished room description does.

For one night, choose the base closest to the next morning's first stop. Consider splitting between Akureyri and Mývatn only with at least three nights or a fixed activity that clearly justifies the move. Changing hotels simply to sleep in both places buys little.

In winter, the base is part of the return-time plan

On the winter road between Akureyri and Mývatn, mountain-pass wind and visibility can change quickly. Check road colours, visibility and crosswinds before leaving. If conditions are poor, stay in town and use the pool or a museum. Mývatn shortens local sightseeing mileage; it does not replace a road decision.

When daylight is short, put the farthest Dettifoss outing inside the midday window and return before dark. A daily run from Akureyri leaves less margin. From Mývatn, cancelling the distant outing still leaves lake-area alternatives. In winter, the room you choose is part of the safety buffer.

Long summer days make Akureyri more flexible as a town base, while Mývatn suits early and late photography. In the shoulder season, keep dry socks and shoes in the car: melting snow can turn a car park into the wettest part of the day.

Transport changes the answer

Without a car, Akureyri is the easier base. Town buses and activity transfers are more available, while Mývatn's sights are spread out. A day tour may be simpler than paying the transport cost of a remote room.

Drivers can choose by route direction. Coming from the west, use Akureyri first and continue to Mývatn; travelling west from the east, stay at Mývatn first and finish in Akureyri for supplies. Check rental terms, winter tyres and parking when you book.

If the next stop is the Westfjords or north-west Iceland, Akureyri is the smoother departure point. If you are following the Diamond Circle, Dettifoss or the north-east coast, Mývatn saves the return drive. A base should serve the route, not only tonight.
